Gamegol Son Wang Mandu, Namdaemun Market: 40-Year-Old Handmade Dumplings (Kimchi Is the One)
📍 Seoul / Namdaemun · Hoehyeon Stn. (Line 4) Exit 5
I did not get to eat here on the first try. I went three times and walked away twice. Gamegol Son Wang Mandu is a 40-year-old dumpling shop in Namdaemun Market, and the original branch is worth the effort — after finally eating there, I understood why people line up.

Learn from my mistakes: check the day
This shop is closed every Sunday. I did not know and showed up on a weekend. My second try was during the Chuseok holiday — closed on public holidays too. The hours are posted on the door: 08:20 to 19:30, closed Sundays. Check the calendar before you go.

Waiting tip: eat in, don’t take out
My third visit was a Monday at 11:30, and it was still packed. The takeout line out front is actually the longer one. Locals told us it is much faster to join the line for eating inside — my husband is a regular, so we went straight to the dine-in line and got in quickly. For dumplings and noodles, head up to the 2nd floor.

Dumplings folded right in front of you
On the 1st floor, a row of staff fold dumplings by hand nonstop, then steam them in big baskets. You can watch the whole process — this is what “handmade” really means.

Upstairs: an old-school market restaurant
A narrow staircase leads to the 2nd floor, where every seat was taken. Water and kimchi are self-service, and takeout orders are handled on the 1st floor after you eat. To be honest, I had to lower my hygiene expectations a little — it is a decades-old market eatery, not a polished restaurant. But the food is the real deal.

Menu and prices
– Pork giant dumplings (4 pcs) ₩5,500 – Kimchi giant dumplings (4 pcs) ₩5,500 – Handmade knife-cut noodles (kalguksu) ₩8,000 – Rice cake & dumpling soup ₩8,000 (seasonal) – Frozen dumplings are takeout only – Cooking takes about 8–10 minutes
You write the quantities on an order slip and hand it in. Four big dumplings for ₩5,500 is a great price these days.

Kimchi dumplings — the best thing here
Bottom line: get the kimchi dumplings. They come piled on a plate, packed full when you cut them open. The kimchi stays crunchy and the filling has a nice spicy kick, while the thick wrapper is soft, not chewy. They are far better than the big dumpling chains.

The knife-cut noodles are great too
We added a bowl of kalguksu. The noodles are thick and chewy, and the light, mild broth is easy to keep eating. It goes perfectly with the dumplings.

If you drive (weekends and holidays only)
On weekends and public holidays, you can park free for 3 hours in the Woori Bank headquarters garage (basement level 4). Pick up a 3-hour ticket at the Namdaemun Market Tourist Information Center, then hand it in when you leave. The garage is open 10:00–18:00, and the ticket is only valid on the day it is issued. Just remember the dumpling shop itself is closed on Sundays and holidays — so this works best on a Saturday.
Don’t skip the market
After dumplings, take a walk through Namdaemun Market. The alleys are packed with shops, and there are several stalls grilling hotteok (sweet filled pancakes). We bought one hot off the griddle — dumplings plus hotteok left us completely stuffed.

Zoapik’s verdict
– Kimchi giant dumplings (4 pcs, ₩5,500) — crunchy kimchi, spicy, the star of the menu – Pork giant dumplings (4 pcs, ₩5,500) — thick but tender wrapper – Knife-cut noodles (₩8,000) — chewy noodles, mild broth, a great match – Watch dumplings being folded by hand on the 1st floor – About 40 m from Hoehyeon Station Exit 5 – Tip: the dine-in line moves faster than the takeout line – Heads-up: closed on Sundays and public holidays – Honest note: it is an old market eatery, so keep hygiene expectations modest
It took me three tries, but it was worth it. Order the kimchi dumplings — the original branch really is different.
