Geudongne Tteokbokki, Yeonnam: Retro Snack Bar Tteokbokki with ₩2,500 Draft Beer

📍 Seoul / Yeonnam (Hongdae) · By Gyeongui Line Forest Park

Here is my one complaint about Korean snack bars as an adult: the tteokbokki is great, but there is no beer. Geudongne Tteokbokki in Yeonnam-dong fixes that. They pour draft beer for ₩2,500 a glass, so we went in hungry and basically ordered everything.

Where it is

The shop sits in a small alley close to Gyeongui Line Forest Park, the long green walking path that runs through Yeonnam-dong. It is an easy stop on a stroll, and if you are already around Hongdae, you can walk over.

A retro snack bar… with a beer tap

Inside, it looks like an old-school Korean *bunsikjip* (a casual snack bar): yellow stained-glass lamps and a worn ceiling left just as it is. Then you look at the counter and see a draft beer machine. That combination is the whole personality of this place. They also serve soju and highballs.

The seats in the back have wooden shelves with bottles and little props, which makes them feel cozy. The window seats are especially nice in the evening.

You order on the tablet at each table. There are not many tables, so you may wait a little at dinner peak time — but it is a fast-moving snack bar, so it did not look like a long wait.

What we ordered (basically the whole menu)

– Salmon gimbap ₩8,500 – Cheese waterfall tteokbokki (for one) ₩8,000 – Garlic oil tteokbokki ₩7,000 – Fried chicken tenderloin (4 pieces) ₩6,000 – Fried squid ₩4,900 – Steamed egg ₩4,000 – Draft beer ₩2,500 · Soju ₩5,000

Even with all of that, the bill felt easy — the biggest surprise of the night.

Salmon gimbap — my personal #1

*Gimbap* is a Korean seaweed rice roll, and this one is stuffed with fresh salmon as thick as the roll itself, plus egg, crab stick and vegetables. Dip it in soy sauce mixed with wasabi and it tastes like sushi. Order this, no matter what.

Fried squid — tied for #1

Thin, crispy batter that is not greasy at all, so you keep reaching for more. It comes with soy sauce and mayo — I liked the mayo better.

Fried chicken tenderloin

Four pieces with a thick coating and juicy meat inside. It is not spicy, so it is great to alternate with the tteokbokki.

Cheese waterfall tteokbokki — hot to the last bite

*Tteokbokki* is chewy rice cakes in a red sauce. Here it comes in a *ttukbaegi* (a hot stone pot) with a whole slice of cheese on top. Wrap the rice cakes in cheese and the heat calms right down. The rice cakes are wheat-based, so they are soft and stretchy rather than super chewy — wheat-cake fans will love it.

The sauce is on the sweet side and not very spicy, so it is fine even if you are not great with spicy food. Because of the stone pot, it stayed hot until the end — my favorite part.

Garlic oil tteokbokki — the non-spicy one

This one is packed with mushrooms (king oyster and shiitake) — it almost looks like more mushrooms than rice cakes. Grated parmesan on top makes the first bite nutty, and the rice cakes are pan-fried golden in the oil. Recommended if you cannot handle spice.

Steamed egg

A stone pot filled to the top with fluffy steamed egg, for ₩4,000. Inside it is soft like silken tofu — perfect between bites of spicy tteokbokki.

The real star: ₩2,500 draft beer

The glass came out frozen, so the very first sip was great. Dip a piece of fried squid in tteokbokki sauce, take a sip of beer, repeat… we did this way too many times.

Tips before you go

– Plan around the 16:00–17:00 break time – It works as a light first stop before heading into Hongdae — or as the whole night – Coming alone? One tteokbokki and a beer for one would not feel awkward at all – They also have a new tonkatsu (pork cutlet) menu and highballs — I want to try both next time

Zoapik’s verdict

– Salmon gimbap and fried squid are my top picks – Both tteokbokki are good — especially if you like soft wheat rice cakes – Stone pots keep everything hot to the end – Draft beer ₩2,500 and soju ₩5,000 — snack food with a drink, finally – The owner was kind, so we left in a good mood – Great value — I am already planning to go back – Heads-up: tables are limited, so expect a short wait at dinner peak

If you want cheap, tasty Korean snack food with a cold beer in Yeonnam, save this one. It felt like going back to a childhood snack bar — as a grown-up.
