Sea Platform Fishing at Samgilpo, Seosan: 18 Rockfish and 2 Red Sea Bream in One Day
📍 Chungnam / Seosan · Samgilpo pier · best reached by car
The weather was so good that we spent a whole day out on the sea. Baeknyeon Jwadae is a floating sea-platform fishing spot in Samgilpo, Seosan, on Korea’s west coast. We took the boat out at 7:30 in the morning, fished all day, and came back with 18 rockfish and 2 red sea bream. We even gave some away!

Getting out to the platform
At Samgilpo pier, look for the boat marked “Baeknyeon Jwadae.” The ride takes only about 3 minutes, so no need to worry about seasickness. The morning sea breeze is colder than you think — everyone on board was bundled up.

Life on a floating platform
Each platform has a big fish pen in the middle, and you sit around the edge to fish. It is wide and surprisingly stable for being on the water. There are chairs all around and shade canopies, plus a table where you can rest and look out at the sea. The official name is Baeknyeon Bada Jwadae, and it can hold up to 281 people.

Natural vs. stocked fishing
– Natural (자연식) — you catch whatever lives in the sea. Cheaper at ₩30,000 for adults. – Stocked (입어식) — ₩60,000. They release rockfish, red sea bream and other seasonal fish three times every morning, so beginners almost always get a bite.
Go natural if you want it cheap, or stocked if you want guaranteed action.
Bait and rod rental
You can buy bait right in front of the boat dock — squid works well. We brought our own rods, but they were too long for the platform. The owner rented us short rods for just ₩3,000 (₩10,000 deposit), which were much easier to use. Only one rod per person is allowed.

The catch
That heavy tug when the float suddenly dips — this is why people love fishing. Keep your catch in a basket in the water and it stays fresh until you leave. When the red sea bream came up, we all screamed. The color is gorgeous.

Meet the platform cat
A calico cat lives on the platform and follows everyone around all day. She comes right up for head rubs — playing with her between catches was the best break.

What to bring
– Warm layers — mornings are cold – Clothes you do not mind getting dirty – Shoes that can get wet (Crocs are perfect) – Sunglasses, a hat and a face mask — the sun on open water is strong, even with shade – Lunch and snacks (we brought gimbap)

Cleaning your fish
We took the afternoon boat back and had a restaurant at the fish market clean our catch: ₩5,000/kg in cash or ₩6,000/kg by card. We paid ₩36,000 for 6.5 kg and bought spicy fish-stew ingredients there too. We picked up an ice box at the 7-Eleven next door. You can also ask the platform to clean your fish for you.

Dinner: sashimi and spicy fish stew
That evening we made a sashimi platter from our own catch — it tasted extra fresh and sweet. The spicy fish stew (maeuntang) with the leftovers was the best.

Zoapik’s verdict
– Floating sea platforms, just 3 minutes by boat from Samgilpo – Natural fishing is cheap; stocked fishing almost guarantees a catch – Rod rental ₩3,000 (₩10,000 deposit), one rod per person – Spacious platforms with chairs and shade – A very friendly resident cat – Pets, parking and separate restrooms – Heads-up: closed on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday · cold mornings and strong sun
A day of fishing in the middle of the sea, then sashimi and stew from our own catch. It is a fun day trip outside Seoul if you have a car, and I am definitely going back when the weather is nice.
