Photochino Hongdae: A Korean Self Photo Studio with Pro Lighting, Free Props and Same-Day Originals

📍 Seoul / Hongdae · Hongik Univ. Stn. Exit 3

Korea is obsessed with photo booths, and self photo studios are the grown-up version: a real studio, real lights, and you press the shutter yourself. At the start of the year I wanted one proper couple photo to remember it by, so my boyfriend and I went to Photochino near Hongik University Station. When the photos came out, my reaction was simply: “Okay, totally worth it.”

What is a self photo studio?

Think of a big, comfy photo booth. You get a small studio with professional lights, a camera and a remote shutter, and nobody stands behind the camera watching you. You pose, giggle, mess up, and try again. Afterward you pick your favorite shots. It is a very Korean way to mark a birthday, an anniversary or a trip with friends.

Finding it

Photochino is on the 2nd floor of the building with Davich Optical (다비치안경) on the ground floor, right at Donggyo-dong Junction. If you know Hongdae at all, you have probably walked past it. The building directory lists Photochino on 2F, and the door is Room 201 with a little neon sign.

A clean, bright lounge

Some self studios feel cramped and a bit worn out. This one does not. The lounge has a long wooden counter, big curtained windows and lots of little details, and everything felt tidy and well looked after. They told us they have been running for almost nine years, which made me trust them even more.

Makeup room and dressing room

This is a bigger deal than it sounds. If there is nowhere to get ready, you are tired before you even start. Photochino has a separate dressing room and a makeup room with a lit mirror, so you can fix your hair and outfit right before the shoot.

They also rent costumes. When I went, you could borrow one for free by joining their on-site review event; otherwise there is a fee. You can see the costume list on their website.

Props: come empty-handed

The fun of a self studio is really the props, and Photochino has a lot: balloons, hats, plush toys, flowers, ribbon headbands and even cake props. I honestly showed up with nothing, and it was more than enough. There are also small add-on packs at the counter in boxes marked ₩500, ₩1,000 and ₩2,000.

One of us had a birthday, so we got a little birthday gift through their event. You pick a capsule, and ours turned into a balloon and candles. Such a sweet touch from the owner.

Lighting and camera: the real secret

For me, this mattered most. A self photo only stops looking “self” if the lighting and camera are good. Photochino uses professional lights, so there are no harsh shadows on your face and skin tone comes out really clean. They shoot on a high-quality full-frame mirrorless camera, so everything is sharp but still soft. “The lighting did all the work” is exactly right.

Picking, originals and retouching

After the shoot, you choose your shots on a tablet. What I loved: – The original files are emailed to you the same day – Two retouched photos are included – You choose the retouch strength, from natural to more defined

I asked for natural. Before finishing, they sent me a preview on KakaoTalk and asked if I wanted anything changed, which I really appreciated. Apart from the two retouched shots, the photos I posted are untouched originals, and friends still said they did not look like self-studio photos at all.

Events when I visited (early 2026)

They were running events through Naver booking, like a coupon for free high-res originals or 10 extra minutes, and a package option (₩10,000) for high-res originals, 10 extra minutes and confetti together. These change, so check the current ones on their booking page.

Zoapik’s verdict

– Pro lighting and a full-frame camera, so photos look studio-made – Originals emailed the same day, plus two retouched shots – Retouch strength is your choice, and they check with you first – Tons of free props, so no need to bring anything – Separate makeup room and dressing room – Clean, well-kept space, two minutes from Hongik University Station – Heads-up: it is closed on Mondays, and booking is through Naver in Korean, so try messaging them on Instagram first

If you want one fun, really pretty souvenir photo from Seoul with your partner or friends, this is a great way to try Korean self studio culture.
