Mongtan Aewol, Jeju: Straw-Fire Beef Short Ribs Near Aewol Café Street (Parking & Waiting Tips)
📍 Jeju / Aewol · Near Aewol Café Street · best reached by car
Mongtan is one of those Seoul barbecue places everyone talks about, and I never managed to get in. So when I heard a new branch had opened in Aewol on Jeju, I went straight there. It turned out to be one of my favorite meals of the whole trip, and the sea and sunset are just a few steps away.

Parking: the first hour is free
The restaurant does not have its own big lot. Instead, you park at the Kakao T Aewol Café Street parking lots (1, 2, 3 or 4), and Mongtan covers the first hour. But with the wait and a slow dinner, we went over and paid a bit extra. Still, there are several lots close by, so finding a spot was easy.
A long red tunnel to the table
The entrance feels like the line for a theme-park ride. You walk through a long, narrow corridor lit in deep red, and by the end I was honestly excited. The outside is heavy grey wood with the name carved into it — very stylish.

Inside: dark, dramatic and spacious
The dining room is darker than a normal Korean barbecue place, with golden walls, tall tree-trunk pillars and glowing lanterns. It reminded me of a grand old inn from a Chinese period drama. Tables are spaced far apart, so it works for families, friends or a date.

Near the kitchen you can watch the meat being smoked over burning straw. That straw fire (jjipbul) is Mongtan’s signature.

Menu and prices
The menu has small English descriptions under each dish, which helps a lot.
- Udae galbi (280 g) ₩35,000 — the big bone-in short rib, seasoned with soy sauce, pineapple and black pepper
- Saeng galbi (fresh beef ribs, 200 g) ₩25,000
- Galbi jumulleok (marinated rib meat, 200 g) ₩25,000
- Meal dishes use Jeju ingredients: radish-kimchi fried rice, Jeju hairtail stone-pot rice (₩23,000), bracken hangover soup (₩12,000) and a Jeju pork noodle soup (₩10,000)
- Drinks: house lemonade and Jeju golden kiwi ade ₩6,000, sodas ₩3,000, plus non-alcoholic beer — great if you are the one driving
- Corkage is allowed

We ordered three servings of udae galbi and a Heineken 0.0. If you come here, the short rib is the one to get.
The side dishes
The banchan (side dishes) were really good. The kimchi cuts through the richness of the beef, and a new icy radish salad — cold, crunchy and refreshing — was the star for me. You also get several dipping sauces; my favorites were the soybean-paste one and the garlic one.

The short rib — they grill it all for you
A staff member cooked our meat from start to finish, so we could just chat and wait. First the whole rib goes on the grill, then they cut it off the bone into thick cubes and cook each piece to just the right point.

The first bite explained everything. It is super juicy and tender, and the gentle straw-smoke aroma brings out the beefy flavor. The more you chew, the nuttier it gets. Honestly, I liked it best with no sauce at all.

Service was warm and friendly from the door to the grill. The branch had just opened, so a few things were a little unpolished, but overall I was very happy.
Waiting: plan on about an hour
This is a popular spot with travelers, so expect a line at meal times. There is a tablet at the entrance where you put your phone number on the waiting list. We signed up at 2 pm and got in at 3 pm — a full hour. My tip: sign up first, then go explore.

Right next door are the Verish flagship store and the eyewear shop Blue Elephant, both with big windows facing the sea. Browsing there made the hour fly by.

After dinner: sea and sunset
After eating, we walked to the sea just nearby and watched the sunset. Aewol Café Street is also close, so you can grab a coffee too. Barbecue, sunset, coffee — a perfect Jeju evening.
Zoapik’s verdict
– Juicy, tender udae galbi with a gentle straw-smoke flavor – Staff grill everything for you, so you can relax – Dramatic red tunnel and golden dining room — very photogenic – Great side dishes, especially the icy radish salad – Non-alcoholic drinks and corkage, handy for drivers – Close to Aewol Café Street, the sea and the sunset – Heads-up: expect about an hour of waiting at meal times, and only the first hour of parking is free
If you want one special barbecue dinner on Jeju, this is it. Next time I want to try the hairtail stone-pot rice too.
